Fulham’s squad overhaul under new head coach Alvaro Arbeloa is gathering pace, with the Spanish manager reportedly turning his attention to Barcelona defender Hector Fort.

According to Spanish outlet Diario Sport, Arbeloa has specifically asked Fulham’s hierarchy to explore the possibility of signing the versatile 20-year-old defender as he continues to reshape his squad ahead of the new season.

Arbeloa reportedly views Fort as an ideal addition to strengthen Fulham’s defence. A potential deal for the Barcelona youngster would also further reinforce the club’s growing Spanish influence under their new manager.

Fulham appointed Arbeloa in July, and the former Real Madrid defender has wasted little time making his mark in the transfer market. Rather than looking beyond familiar territory, Arbeloa has shown a willingness to tap into the Spanish football system as he looks to build a squad capable of competing at a higher level.

Before turning his attention to Fort, Fulham had already completed deals for two highly rated young players from Real Madrid, where Arbeloa previously worked: Gonzalo Garcia and Cesar Palacios.

Fort would offer Fulham considerable versatility. The defender is capable of operating on either flank, having played as both a right-back and a left-back, giving Arbeloa additional tactical flexibility.

The youngster returned to Barcelona this summer after completing a loan spell at Elche, where he managed to make a strong impression during the final stages of the season despite previously being hampered by injury problems.

However, Fort faces a difficult battle for regular playing time at Barcelona. With competition for places at Camp Nou expected to remain intense, a permanent move could represent the most realistic route for the defender to secure consistent first-team football.

Barcelona are reportedly open to allowing Fort to leave on a permanent basis. The Catalan club could be prepared to sanction his departure if an offer in the region of €10 million arrives on the table.

Fulham are believed to be leading the race for his signature, although they are not alone in monitoring the situation. Everton have also reportedly expressed an interest in Fort, potentially setting up a competitive battle for the young defender’s services.

For Arbeloa, bringing Fort to Craven Cottage would represent another step in his attempt to give Fulham a distinctly Spanish flavour while adding a young, versatile defender to his rebuilding project.
