Enzo Fernandez: I’ve Always Dreamed of Playing for a Club as Big as Man City!
Enzo Fernandez has expressed his happiness after officially ending his spell at Chelsea and completing a blockbuster move to Manchester City.
The Argentina international joined City during the 2026 summer transfer window in one of the biggest transfers in Premier League history. Manchester City reportedly paid Chelsea £125 million for the 25-year-old midfielder, matching the British transfer record set when Liverpool signed Alexander Isak from Newcastle United in the summer of 2025.
Fernandez has signed a five-year contract with the Citizens, committing his future to the club until 2031.
Speaking in his first interview as a Manchester City player, Fernandez made no attempt to hide his excitement at the move. The midfielder described the opportunity to represent the reigning Premier League powerhouse as the fulfilment of a long-standing ambition.
“I have always dreamed of playing for a club as big as Manchester City,” Fernandez said, as quoted by ESPN.
The former Chelsea midfielder was also impressed by City’s structure and ambitions. He believes he has joined a club built to compete for major trophies on a regular basis and is eager to begin his new chapter under manager Enzo Maresca.
“Every player wants to be part of a club like this. Everyone knows how well City are run.
“I couldn’t be happier to be here, and I’m ready for the challenge of helping City continue to win trophies. This is a club built for success,” he added.
The transfer brings an end to Fernandez’s three-and-a-half-year association with Chelsea. The Blues originally signed him from Benfica in February 2023 for a reported £107 million, making him one of the most expensive players in Premier League history at the time.
During his time at Stamford Bridge, Fernandez developed into an important figure in Chelsea’s midfield and played a key role in several successful campaigns. He also helped the club win the UEFA Conference League and the FIFA Club World Cup.
However, his relationship with Chelsea supporters deteriorated towards the end of his spell in west London. Fernandez was reportedly booed by sections of the fanbase during a pre-season fixture against Real Sociedad and again in the opening Premier League match against Fulham.
The situation appeared to reach a decisive point when new Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso left Fernandez out of the squad for the Carabao Cup meeting with Luton Town.
That decision further suggested that the Argentine’s future at Stamford Bridge was effectively over, paving the way for his record-breaking transfer to Manchester City.
Fernandez now begins a new chapter at the Etihad Stadium, where he will be expected to bring his passing range, tactical intelligence and midfield control to a City side determined to challenge for major domestic and European honours.
For the Argentine, the move represents both a fresh start and the opportunity to fulfil a dream of playing for one of England’s most ambitious clubs.
