Luka Menalo Explains Viral Reaction During Persib’s Win Over Persijap
Persib Bandung forward Luka Menalo has explained the spontaneous reaction that went viral during his side’s 2-1 victory over Persijap in the BRI Super League.
Persib secured all three points at Gelora Bumi Kartini Stadium on Sunday, September 20, 2026, but Menalo’s reaction during the second half quickly became a talking point among supporters.
The Bosnia and Herzegovina international was involved in a brief exchange with referee Erfan Effendi after questioning one of his decisions.
The initial protest was relatively routine, with Menalo simply seeking clarification over the referee’s call. However, his reaction changed when Effendi responded to his argument.
Menalo then made a gesture resembling the sign of the cross, a gesture commonly associated with Christians. The moment quickly went viral after being shared by several Persib supporter, or Bobotoh, fan accounts on social media.
Asked about the incident, Menalo said the gesture was completely spontaneous and came simply because he was surprised by what had happened.
“I was surprised. I was really surprised and couldn’t believe what was happening. That’s all. There is no other explanation,” Menalo said.
