Barcelona have reportedly added RB Leipzig defender Castello Lukeba to their list of potential defensive targets as they consider strengthening the squad before the summer transfer window closes.

The France international has only recently emerged on Barcelona’s radar, and it remains unclear how seriously the Catalan giants intend to pursue a deal for the 23-year-old.

Barcelona’s primary focus remains finding a new centre-forward before the transfer window shuts next week. The club are looking for a replacement for Robert Lewandowski, although their search has yet to produce a definitive target as the possibility of signing Julian Alvarez remains uncertain.

According to The Athletic, however, Barcelona are also exploring the possibility of bringing in another centre-back. The profile they are seeking could be particularly versatile, with the player also capable of operating as a left-back.

That flexibility could become increasingly important if Alejandro Balde leaves the club. The Spain international has been the subject of growing speculation over his future, potentially leaving Barcelona in need of additional depth on the left side of their defence.

Lukeba has now emerged as one of the names being considered.

The French defender first attracted significant attention during his breakthrough at Lyon, where his performances quickly established him as one of France’s most promising young defenders. RB Leipzig moved to secure his services in the summer of 2023, paying around €30 million for his transfer.

Lukeba adapted quickly to Bundesliga football and became an important part of Leipzig’s defence. Last season, he made 29 appearances across all competitions and helped the club secure Champions League qualification.

Under new head coach Martin Demichelis, Lukeba remains expected to play a key role during the 2026/27 campaign. The defender is under contract with Leipzig until 2029, giving the German club a strong negotiating position should Barcelona make a formal approach.

There has been no indication yet that Leipzig are actively looking to sell the France international. The situation could nevertheless change if Barcelona decide to turn their initial interest into a concrete offer.

For now, Lukeba remains only one name on Barcelona’s defensive shortlist. With the transfer deadline approaching, the club must balance their need for a new striker with the possibility of adding a versatile defender capable of covering multiple positions.

Whether the Frenchman eventually makes the move to Catalonia will depend on Barcelona’s priorities in the final days of the transfer window and Leipzig’s willingness to consider an offer for one of their key defensive players.
