Barcelona’s impressive unbeaten run will face another stern examination this week when they take on Paris Saint-Germain in the third matchday of the UEFA Champions League. Despite their excellent form under Hansi Flick, the Blaugrana could be vulnerable at the back, with reports suggesting that two key defenders will be unavailable for the trip to Paris.

Barcelona head into the contest on the back of a convincing 5-2 victory over Real Betis. The result extended their winning streak to 11 matches across all competitions, underlining the consistency and attacking firepower Flick has instilled in his team. During that run, Barcelona have scored an impressive 48 goals while conceding just 11.

However, their latest challenge promises to be considerably more demanding. Barcelona will travel to Paris to face PSG in the early hours of Wednesday, October 21, Western Indonesian Time, with their defensive depth likely to come under scrutiny.

According to Fabrizio Romano, Eric Garcia and Jules Kounde are both expected to miss the match. Garcia’s absence could be particularly significant, with the defender reportedly facing a spell on the sidelines lasting three to four weeks.

Without Garcia and Kounde, Flick will need to find the right defensive combination to contain a PSG side that has also demonstrated its quality in Europe. The French champions have won their last two European fixtures, most recently defeating Manchester City 4-2 on home soil.

The clash is shaping up to be a compelling encounter between two sides widely regarded as among Europe’s strongest. Nevertheless, strong performances during the league phase do not necessarily guarantee success in the knockout rounds, where the pressure and margin for error increase significantly.

PSG have already demonstrated their ability to rise to the occasion. Despite experiencing difficulties during the 2024-25 campaign, the Parisian side ultimately went on to win the Champions League and complete a historic treble. Their recent results suggest they remain a formidable opponent capable of testing even the most in-form teams.

For Barcelona, much will depend on Flick’s tactical decisions and his ability to compensate for the absence of two important defenders. Gerard Martin and Xavi Espart are among the potential options who could be called upon to shoulder greater responsibility if Garcia and Kounde are ruled out.

With Barcelona’s attacking momentum meeting PSG’s European pedigree, the decisive factor could be how well the visitors manage their defensive vulnerabilities. Flick’s ability to reorganise his back line could prove crucial if Barcelona are to maintain their unbeaten run and secure another significant result on the continental stage.
