The Cong-Viettel FC head coach Velizar Popov believes Persib Bandung will pose a significant challenge when the two sides meet in the second matchday of Group E in the AFC Champions League Two (ACL Two). The Bulgarian coach has closely analysed Persib’s recent performances and identified a consistent tactical approach across their last four matches.

Popov described Persib as a strong and versatile team whose squad depth allows them to adopt different strategies depending on the circumstances. He was particularly impressed by their ability to respond when trailing, as well as their performances away from home in Asian competition.

“I believe Persib are a very strong team, and their last two away victories prove that. When you can beat FC Seoul in their own stadium and defeat Port FC in Thailand, it shows that you are a very good team,” Popov said.

The Bulgarian coach also highlighted Persib’s impressive squad depth, pointing to the number of high-quality players available to head coach Igor Tolic. He singled out Marc Klok as an example of the experience and quality within the Indonesian side, praising not only his footballing ability but also his character.

“Their squad depth is remarkable, with many high-quality players. I have known some of them for a long time, including Marc Klok, who is not only a great player but also an outstanding person. Their attacking quality is particularly impressive,” Popov added.

Popov revealed that The Cong-Viettel coaching staff had conducted an extensive tactical analysis of Persib’s recent matches. Although he was reluctant to disclose the finer details of their preparations, he explained that Persib’s tactical shape differs between continental and domestic competitions.

“Of course, we will keep our tactical analysis within the team. However, in international competitions, I have seen them use a 3-4-3 formation when attacking before switching to a 5-4-1 shape when defending. In domestic competitions, they use a back four,” he explained.

For Popov, Persib’s flexibility is further strengthened by the quality of the players available from the bench. Their ability to introduce fresh attacking options without significantly reducing their threat could become a major factor in the contest, particularly as the game progresses into the second half.

“Their attacking quality is very good. They can start with high-quality players and then bring on three more players in the second half who can make a difference. Their depth in midfield is also excellent,” Popov said.

Nevertheless, the The Cong-Viettel manager believes there could be opportunities to exploit Persib’s defensive situation. He noted that several of the Indonesian side’s centre-backs had reportedly suffered injuries in their previous match, potentially forcing Tolic to make changes to his defensive lineup.

Popov acknowledged that Persib’s coach has the tactical creativity to adapt to the absence of key players, making it difficult to predict precisely how the hosts will approach the encounter.

“From their last match, I noticed that some of their centre-backs were injured, so we will see whether we can take advantage of that. Overall, however, their squad depth and player quality are remarkable, and this will be a difficult match,” he concluded.

Popov’s assessment underlines the respect The Cong-Viettel have for their Indonesian opponents. Persib’s victories over FC Seoul and Port FC have demonstrated their ability to compete away from home, while their tactical flexibility and depth provide Tolic with several options throughout a match.

For The Cong-Viettel, the challenge will be to turn their analysis into an effective game plan. Popov may have identified Persib’s preferred formations and potential defensive weaknesses, but the Bandung side’s ability to adapt could ultimately determine whether that preparation translates into a positive result.
