Dortmund Aim For Woltemade, After Konstantelias Suffers ACL
Borussia Dortmund have been dealt a major blow just days before the 20206 summer transfer window closes, with new signing Giannis Konstantelias ruled out after suffering an ACL injury.
The setback has forced Dortmund to return to the transfer market in search of a replacement, and local reports suggest the Bundesliga giants have identified Newcastle United forward Nick Woltemade as one of their preferred options.
The Germany international, who was born in Bremen, is reportedly viewed as an ideal candidate to fill the void left by Konstantelias. Dortmund are believed to be considering a loan deal, partly because of their financial constraints, although Newcastle have yet to provide an official response to the German club’s interest.
Woltemade joined Newcastle from VfB Stuttgart in the summer of 2025 and has since made 51 appearances for the Magpies, scoring 11 goals. However, his form has reportedly declined significantly towards the end of 2026.
The 24-year-old has already faced mounting criticism from Newcastle supporters at the beginning of the current campaign. He was left out entirely for the Premier League meeting with Liverpool, while he was given a full 90 minutes in Newcastle’s Carabao Cup clash with West Bromwich Albion but failed to make a positive impact.
Those performances have intensified scrutiny surrounding the striker, with fans increasingly questioning his contribution to the team. Despite the criticism, Newcastle manager Matthias Jaissle is reportedly still keen to keep Woltemade at St James’ Park. The coach is believed to be working on returning the forward to his natural role as either a second striker or a more traditional centre-forward.
A move to Dortmund could therefore represent an opportunity for Woltemade to rediscover his confidence and revive his career, particularly with the German club potentially offering him a more familiar environment. However, much will depend on Newcastle’s willingness to sanction a temporary move.
With the transfer window closing soon, Dortmund have little time to find a solution to the sudden absence of Konstantelias. Woltemade’s future has consequently become one of the more intriguing stories to follow before deadline day. The question now is whether he will remain at St James’ Park and fight for his place or return to Germany to relaunch his career at Signal Iduna Park.
