FIFA ASEAN Cup 2026: Dean James’ Performance Puts John Herdman in a Good Mood
Indonesia got off to a positive start in the FIFA ASEAN Cup 2026 with a 2-0 victory over Singapore at the Gelora Bung Karno Stadium (SUGBK), Jakarta, on Friday (25/9) evening WIB.
Ragnar Oratmangoen opened the scoring for Indonesia in the 13th minute after converting Luke Vickery’s assist. Ole Romeny then doubled the Garuda’s lead from the penalty spot in the 73rd minute.
Despite the victory, John Herdman paid special attention to Dean James. The 26-year-old wing-back played aggressively and was frequently involved in Indonesia’s attacking moves.
Herdman even admitted that he was surprised by Dean James’ contribution during the match. Despite only recently joining the Indonesia national team, the Go Ahead Eagles player delivered a convincing performance.
“Some of the new players we brought in, such as Dean James, I thought were outstanding tonight. We can also see that he still has to adapt to the conditions here,” John Herdman said during the post-match press conference.
However, Dean James’ impressive performance came with a concern over his physical condition. He was substituted early in the second half and replaced by Nathan Tjoe-A-On after experiencing a problem.
His condition will be closely monitored by Indonesia, especially with another important fixture coming up. The Garuda will face Malaysia in their second FIFA ASEAN Cup 2026 match on Monday (28/9) evening WIB.
The potential absence of Dean James could affect Indonesia’s preparations for the clash against Malaysia. The player has become one of Herdman’s key options on the wing.
Besides Dean James, Herdman is also monitoring the conditions of Emil Audero Mulyadi and Ragnar Oratmangoen. All three players will undergo further assessment before the coaching staff determines their availability for the next match.
“Regarding the injuries, we are assessing our goalkeeper, Emil Audero. We will also assess Dean James, who had to come off the pitch, as well as Ragnar (Oratmangoen),” Herdman added.
Indonesia will now focus on recovering their players before turning their attention to Malaysia in their second FIFA ASEAN Cup 2026 fixture.
