Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes briefly became an injury concern during the international break after missing Portugal’s UEFA Nations League meeting with Wales. However, the midfielder has since returned to full fitness, with Portugal head coach Jorge Jesus providing an explanation for the issue.

Fernandes was among several Manchester United players to experience fitness problems while representing their countries. Patrick Dorgu was ruled out after picking up an injury with Denmark, while Noussair Mazraoui was also withdrawn during Morocco’s recent international fixture.

United supporters were therefore given further reason for concern when Fernandes was absent from Portugal’s match against Wales. Jesus subsequently revealed that the midfielder had arrived at the national team camp carrying discomfort that required careful management.

“We wanted every player available for the match against Wales, but Bruno could not play because of a complicated problem. In certain situations, Fernandes needed treatment to recover,” Jesus said, as reported by the Daily Mirror.

The Portugal coach added that Fernandes had not arrived at the camp in ideal condition after experiencing pain during his recent run of matches for Manchester United. The midfielder had reportedly been dealing with discomfort across his previous three games.

Despite the concern, Fernandes remained with the Portugal squad and was ultimately diagnosed with only a minor injury. After completing full training with his international teammates, the 31-year-old has now been declared fit and is expected to be available when Portugal face Denmark.

The latest setback appears to have been little more than a precautionary issue for a player who has generally enjoyed an impressive injury record since moving to Old Trafford in January 2020. Fernandes has missed only six matches for Manchester United during his time at the club.

His importance to the team remains clear this season. Fernandes has already scored four goals and provided one assist in seven appearances across all competitions, continuing to operate as one of United’s main creative outlets.

Fernandes will now turn his attention back to club football after the international break. Manchester United are scheduled to face Tottenham Hotspur on October 10, with the captain expected to be available for the Premier League encounter.
