Marcel Sabitzer Takes Break From Austria Duty to Manage Heavy Workload

Borussia Dortmund midfielder Marcel Sabitzer has decided to step away from international duty with Austria for the time being, choosing to take a break after an increasingly demanding period of his career.

The 32-year-old will miss Austria’s upcoming UEFA Nations League fixtures and could also be unavailable for their Euro 2028 qualifying matches in March 2027. Sabitzer has stressed that the decision is not a retirement from international football, but rather a temporary measure designed to manage his workload.

Sabitzer’s decision comes after an exceptionally busy period that has included both club and international football. During the previous campaign, he played 45 matches across competitions for Dortmund and Austria before also featuring at the 2026 World Cup.

The accumulation of fixtures has convinced the midfielder that he needs more time to recover, particularly as Dortmund face another packed schedule this season.

Sabitzer remains an important figure for the Austria national team. The former Manchester United player has earned 102 international caps across all competitions and has been a regular presence in midfield during recent major tournaments.

However, the European Championship in 2024 and the 2026 World Cup added further demands to an already heavy calendar. Combined with his responsibilities at Dortmund, Sabitzer believes continuing to play every available international fixture could eventually affect his ability to perform at club level.

Importantly, Sabitzer has not indicated that he intends to end his international career permanently. Instead, he wants to use the current period to preserve his fitness and energy while continuing to compete at the highest level for as long as possible. At his age, he recognises that recovery requires greater attention than it did earlier in his career.

The midfielder’s decision also highlights the growing physical demands placed on elite footballers, with club competitions, international tournaments and expanded schedules creating increasingly congested calendars.

For Sabitzer, the priority is finding a sustainable balance rather than stepping away from the game. He intends to continue playing football at the highest level, but for now, he has chosen to take a break from Austria duty and focus his energy on Borussia Dortmund.

His decision ultimately reflects an understanding of his own physical limits after years of playing at the highest level. Rather than waiting until his workload begins to affect his performances, Sabitzer has chosen to manage the situation on his own terms.

For Austria, his absence represents the loss of an experienced midfielder. For Sabitzer, however, the temporary break could provide the recovery time he needs to remain an important player for both club and country in the years ahead.
