The 2026/27 Ligue 1 season officially kicks off this week, with the opening round featuring one of the most highly anticipated clashes: defending champions Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) against a formidable Stade Rennais side.

However, this match comes with an intriguing twist before kickoff. The game was originally scheduled to take place at PSG’s home ground, Parc des Princes, but the venue has been moved to Rennes’ Roazhon Park.

The decision was made after an extreme heatwave swept across France throughout the summer, damaging the quality of the pitch at PSG’s home stadium. With the approval of both clubs and the LFP Competition Committee, Rennes will host the opening-round fixture instead.

PSG head into the match determined to secure a victory and make a strong start to their title defense. However, Luis Enrique’s side have not enjoyed an entirely smooth preparation after suffering a defeat to Lens in the Trophée des Champions.

They will also be without first-choice left-back Nuno Mendes, who is serving a three-match suspension. The arrival of new signing Ferran Torres is expected to provide an additional attacking boost alongside Ousmane Dembélé and Bradley Barcola.

On the other side, Stade Rennais, now under a new coaching staff, will be eager to take advantage of their unexpected home advantage. Their recent head-to-head record against PSG should give Les Rouge et Noir plenty of confidence.

In their most recent meeting at Roazhon Park in February 2026, Rennes stunned PSG with a convincing 3-1 victory. With the attacking threat of Esteban Lepaul and Musa Al-Taamari, Rennes could once again pose a serious challenge to PSG’s defense.

The match is expected to be fiercely contested from the opening minutes. Luis Enrique’s side are likely to dominate possession thanks to the depth and quality of their star-studded squad. However, playing at Roazhon Park has always presented a physical challenge, particularly with the intense pressure generated by the home crowd.

If PSG can overcome the defensive issues caused by Nuno Mendes’ absence, their attacking quality should be enough to secure all three points in their opening fixture. Rennes, meanwhile, will be equally motivated to put on a performance worthy of their supporters.

The Stade Rennais vs. PSG clash will take place on Monday, August 24, 2026, at 1:45 a.m. WIB (Sunday, August 23, 6:45 p.m. CET) at Roazhon Park in Rennes. The match will also be broadcast live on beIN Sports.
