Roma Target Former Bayern Munich as Gasperini Seeks New Left-Back
AS Roma head coach Gian Piero Gasperini is reportedly looking to strengthen the left side of his defence, with free agent Raphael Guerreiro emerging as a potential target for the capital club.
Guerreiro is currently without a club after his contract with Bayern Munich expired at the end of last season. His availability on a free transfer has made the experienced Portugal international an attractive option for Roma as Gasperini looks to add a natural left-back to his squad.
According to Tuttomercatoweb, Guerreiro is one of the players being considered by Gasperini to fill the position. His natural role on the left side of defence is viewed as a particularly suitable fit, especially because Roma currently lack a recognised specialist in that position.
Gasperini has occasionally deployed Wesley on the left in his tactical system despite the Brazilian being more accustomed to operating on the opposite flank. Bringing in a natural left-back such as Guerreiro would therefore give the coach greater balance and flexibility within his defensive structure.
Roma, however, are not the only club interested in the 32-year-old. Greek giants Olympiacos are also reportedly monitoring the situation and could offer Guerreiro an opportunity to continue his career in Greece.
Despite the interest from both clubs, Guerreiro has yet to decide where he wants to continue his career. His status as a free agent means he can still carefully consider his options before committing to his next destination.
The Portugal international has spent much of his career in Germany. After leaving FC Lorient in 2016, Guerreiro joined Borussia Dortmund before later moving to Bayern Munich, establishing himself as a reliable player at two of the Bundesliga’s biggest clubs.
During his time in Germany, Guerreiro won several domestic honours and accumulated more than 200 Bundesliga appearances. He also contributed over 40 goals and assists across his spells with Dortmund and Bayern.
For Roma, signing Guerreiro would provide an experienced option in a position where Gasperini currently lacks a natural specialist. Whether the former Bayern defender ultimately chooses the Italian capital or takes up Olympiacos’ interest remains to be seen.
