Mauro Zijlstra was not included in the Persija Jakarta squad travelling to Thailand for their pre-season training camp. But what is the reason behind the striker’s absence?

Persija are currently holding a two-week training camp in Thailand. Shin Tae-yong’s side travelled earlier this week and are scheduled to return to Jakarta on August 23.

A total of 22 players were included in the Persija squad that travelled to Thailand. Meanwhile, players who recently represented the Indonesian national team at the 2026 AFF Championship were given permission to join the squad later, on August 14.

Interestingly, Mauro Zijlstra was not among the players selected for the training camp in Thailand. His absence immediately raised questions about the 21-year-old striker’s future at the club.

However, Zijlstra’s absence has nothing to do with Shin Tae-yong leaving him out of his plans. The striker is still completing his recovery from injury.

“Mauro Zijlstra has also yet to join the team as he is still in the final stage of his rehabilitation following a hamstring injury,” Persija said in an official statement.

Zijlstra is not the only Persija player who missed the training camp in Thailand. South Korean midfielder Kwon Chang-hoon is also absent due to a similar injury issue.

Kwon has been given permission to continue his calf injury rehabilitation in South Korea. The 32-year-old is expected to return to action before the start of the 2026/27 season.
