Cristiano Ronaldo has once again become the centre of attention in the international football headlines after reportedly leaving Portugal’s training camp amid growing speculation over his relationship with head coach Jorge Jesus.

The situation began after Ronaldo was reportedly unhappy with being used as a substitute during Portugal’s UEFA Nations League campaign. Although Portugal eventually secured a 2-1 victory, questions surrounding the atmosphere inside the squad intensified following comments from Jesus.

The Portugal coach insisted that there was no disagreement between himself and the national team’s captain, stressing that Ronaldo had remained professional throughout the situation.

“Cristiano Ronaldo has never refused to train. There is no problem whatsoever. He told me: if you want me to play, I will play. If you want me on the bench, I am ready. Even if you want me in the stands, I will sit there,” Jorge Jesus said, according to Get Football News Spain.

Jesus’ comments were intended to ease concerns about tension within the squad, but the situation took a different turn when Ronaldo responded publicly on X.

The five-time Ballon d’Or winner revealed that he had decided to leave the national team camp following the coach’s press conference and a subsequent conversation with Portuguese Football Federation president Pedro Proenca.

“Following the press conference of the national team coach, and after a conversation with the president of the Portuguese Football Federation, I decided to leave the national team camp,” Ronaldo wrote.

“In due course, I will explain the truth to the Portuguese people about the reasons that led me to leave the national team, which I have always served with all my heart. For now, I wish Portugal and all my teammates, without exception, the best of luck.”

According to Marca, Ronaldo subsequently left Portugal’s training base and was expected to travel to Madrid on his private aircraft. His decision to depart came shortly after the latest public comments from Jesus, adding further intrigue to an already unusual situation surrounding the national team.

At 41, Ronaldo’s departure has inevitably prompted renewed speculation about his future with Portugal. The veteran forward remains one of the most important figures in the country’s football history, and any prolonged disagreement with the coaching staff could raise further questions about how his international career will develop from here.

For now, however, Ronaldo’s own statement suggests that more details could emerge at a later date. Until then, the focus will remain on what prompted his decision to leave camp and whether the episode will have any lasting impact on his relationship with Jesus and the Portuguese national team.
