Former Barcelona Doubts Yamal Can Break Into the Blaugrana’s Golden Generation
Former Barcelona forward Cristian Tello believes Lamine Yamal would have struggled to secure a regular starting place had he emerged during the club’s golden generation around 2012, when competition for attacking positions was considerably fiercer.
Tello, who recently announced his retirement from professional football, acknowledged Yamal’s extraordinary impact at such a young age. The former La Masia graduate described the Barcelona winger as one of the new faces of world football, highlighting how few players of his age have managed to influence both club and international football to the same extent.
However, Tello believes the circumstances at Barcelona during the early 2010s would have made Yamal’s path into the first team significantly more difficult. At the time, the Catalan giants boasted an extraordinary collection of attacking talent, including Lionel Messi, Pedro, David Villa, Alexis Sanchez and Neymar.
“Becoming a starter at that time would have been difficult for him because the situation was complicated. We had Alexis Sanchez, Pedro, Villa, Messi and Neymar. It was difficult for players coming through the academy to find a place in the team,” Tello said, as reported by Diario Sport.
According to Tello, the current Barcelona setup offers a different environment for young players emerging from La Masia. With fewer established competitors in certain positions, talented youngsters can find opportunities to break into the senior squad at an earlier stage of their careers.
The situation was very different during Barcelona’s dominant years, when established stars regularly featured every week. Academy graduates often had to settle for substitute appearances or wait patiently for opportunities, making it considerably harder to establish themselves as first-team regulars.
Beyond his assessment of Yamal, Tello also praised Barcelona’s performances under head coach Hansi Flick. He believes the current side has developed a more balanced attacking approach, combining width and pace with greater cohesion across the team.
Those qualities have helped Barcelona make an impressive start to the LaLiga campaign. The Catalan side have won all seven of their opening league matches, establishing themselves as early contenders for the title under Flick.
Barcelona will now look to maintain that perfect record when they host Getafe at Camp Nou on Saturday, October 10, following the international break. With Yamal continuing to play a prominent role in the team’s attacking setup, Flick’s side will hope their current momentum can carry into the next stage of the season.
For Tello, Yamal’s rise is a testament to the winger’s exceptional ability, but it also highlights how much the competitive landscape at Barcelona has changed. While the teenager might have faced a tougher battle for minutes during the club’s golden era, his performances today have already established him as one of the most exciting young talents in world football.
