Former Napoli manager Antonio Conte has praised Barcelona’s approach to developing young players, highlighting Xavi Espart as the latest promising talent to emerge from the club’s renowned La Masia academy.

Barcelona have increasingly relied on academy graduates to strengthen their first-team squad in recent seasons. Rather than simply offering youngsters occasional opportunities, the Catalan giants have helped several of them establish themselves as key figures, with Gavi and Pau Cubarsi providing clear examples of La Masia’s continued importance.

The club’s financial difficulties have also contributed to this approach, forcing Barcelona to place greater trust in homegrown talent to support the tactical plans of Hansi Flick and his predecessors. However, the emergence of young players has demonstrated that financial constraints can also create opportunities for promising prospects to make their mark at the highest level.

Speaking to Mundo Deportivo in an interview reported by The Athletic, Conte expressed his admiration for Barcelona’s ability to integrate young players into the senior team. He believes the club have developed an effective structure that allows academy graduates to make the transition despite the considerable pressure of performing in front of tens of thousands of supporters at Camp Nou.

“I would like to visit their academy. Barcelona have a clear structure that allows young players to progress into the first team,” Conte said.

The Italian coach also singled out Espart, who has recently begun establishing himself within Barcelona’s senior setup. The 19-year-old full-back has reportedly made six LaLiga appearances this season, contributing one goal and two assists as he continues to gain experience at the highest level.

Conte admitted that Espart was not a player he had previously been familiar with when watching Barcelona last season. At that stage, the youngster had made only four appearances and was rarely involved, with a loan move reportedly being considered to provide him with more regular playing time.

However, Espart’s circumstances have since changed significantly. Rather than moving elsewhere to gain experience, he has earned opportunities with Barcelona’s first team and impressed with the composure he has shown despite his age.

“I watched Barcelona and had never heard of Xavi Espart. He played four times last season and rarely featured. Barcelona wanted to send him out on loan. Now, he is in the first team and playing with such ease. It is remarkable,” Conte added.

Espart’s progress reflects Barcelona’s broader commitment to giving young players a genuine pathway into senior football. While financial considerations have played a role in that strategy, the club’s ability to develop talent and integrate it into the first team has also become one of its defining strengths.

For Conte, Barcelona’s approach offers an impressive example of how a strong academy structure can help young footballers make the step into elite competition. With Espart now emerging as another promising prospect, La Masia continues to demonstrate its importance to the club’s present and future.
