Ferdinand Laments Man United’s Failure to Sign Bouaddi After Teenager Impresses at Man City
Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand has expressed his frustration at his former club’s failure to secure the signing of Ayyoub Bouaddi from Lille during the summer transfer window. The Moroccan teenager subsequently joined Manchester City, where he has already begun making an impression under Enzo Maresca.
United had previously shown interest in the 19-year-old midfielder but never progressed to serious negotiations. City, meanwhile, moved decisively to complete a deal worth £86 million, making Bouaddi the most expensive teenager in Premier League history.
Bouaddi was recruited as part of City’s midfield rebuild alongside Elliot Anderson and Enzo Fernandez. The trio were brought in to help replace Rodri, Bernardo Silva and Tijjani Reijnders, who had all departed for new clubs.
Ferdinand had repeatedly identified Bouaddi as a promising young talent who could have made a significant contribution at Old Trafford. United’s failure to complete the transfer has therefore left the former defender particularly disappointed, especially after seeing the teenager demonstrate his ability on a major European stage.
“Did you see Bouaddi when he came on? I’ve been talking about him since last year, including when the transfer window opened. He came on as a substitute and showed why PSG might regret missing out on him, even when he was still playing in France,” Ferdinand said on his YouTube channel.
Bouaddi made his impact felt during Manchester City’s Champions League encounter with Paris Saint-Germain in midweek. Although the Cityzens ultimately suffered defeat, the young midfielder impressed with his composure and ability to distribute the ball from the centre of the pitch. He also provided an assist for Erling Haaland’s goal, further highlighting his potential.
Despite not yet turning 20, Bouaddi has already given City reasons to believe their substantial investment could prove worthwhile. Ferdinand, in particular, believes the teenager’s performance demonstrated the qualities United should have pursued. He also questioned the value of his former club’s recruitment strategy, pointing to the combined expenditure on Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans, which he claimed matched the fee City paid for Bouaddi.
“United had been monitoring him, but they felt his asking price was too high. Watching his performance against PSG, I couldn’t believe the club had allowed the opportunity to sign him to slip away. He was so composed despite being put under sustained pressure throughout the match,” Ferdinand added.
Bouaddi’s early displays have offered a glimpse of why Manchester City were prepared to pay such a significant fee for a teenage midfielder. For Ferdinand, however, the bigger story is United’s missed opportunity—a transfer decision that could become increasingly difficult to justify if Bouaddi continues to develop into one of Europe’s most promising young midfielders.
