Manchester United head coach Michael Carrick has admitted his frustration with his team’s performance following their heavy 4-1 defeat to Como in the Champions League. The disappointing result extended the Red Devils’ struggles, with the English manager taking full responsibility for the team’s failure to deliver a convincing performance in Italy.

The match at Stadio Giuseppe Sinigaglia on Thursday, October 22, saw Como claim a commanding victory through a brace from Nico Paz, alongside goals from Anastasios Douvikas and Jacobo Ramon. Manchester United managed only a late consolation through Joshua Zirkzee, leaving Carrick’s side with just three points from their opening three Champions League matches.

The defeat also added to United’s worrying run of results across all competitions. They have now lost five of their last 11 matches, raising further concerns about their ability to find consistency under Carrick. The manager was visibly disappointed with what he saw from his players, although he insisted that he would not deflect responsibility for the damaging result.

“I’ve spent my entire life in football. I feel that, regardless of the tactical approach you take, if you don’t run forward and chase the ball, you aren’t going to win,” Carrick said, as reported by the Daily Mail.

The United manager also expressed concern about the way his team moved across the pitch, arguing that their positioning and overall approach lacked the intensity required to compete effectively. Although he acknowledged that the defeat was his responsibility, Carrick made it clear that the performance itself was unacceptable.

For the former Middlesbrough manager, the issue extends beyond tactical decisions. He believes United must demonstrate greater commitment, urgency and purpose if they are to turn their poor form around. Without those fundamental qualities, even the most carefully prepared game plan is unlikely to produce the desired results.

“In football, everything comes down to the intensity and purpose you bring to a match. I didn’t see those qualities out there. Until we have them, I don’t think we will be able to win enough games,” he added.

Carrick’s comments underline the scale of the challenge facing Manchester United as they attempt to recover from another damaging defeat. With their Champions League campaign already under pressure, the manager will need an immediate response from his players, both in their attitude and their performances on the pitch.

United’s next opportunity to bounce back comes against Bournemouth at Old Trafford on Sunday, October 25. After a difficult night in Italy, Carrick will be expected to find a way to restore his team’s intensity and confidence before their disappointing run of results becomes even harder to reverse.
