Inter Milan’s impressive form in Serie A has failed to translate into the Champions League, with Cristian Chivu’s side suffering a second consecutive defeat after a dramatic 4-3 loss to Club Brugge at the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza on Wednesday, October 14.

The result came as a major surprise given Inter’s strong start to their domestic campaign. The Nerazzurri have won five of their opening six Serie A matches, but they have struggled to reproduce that consistency in Europe, where their latest setback has raised serious questions about their defensive stability.

Inter had already suffered a 2-1 defeat against Real Madrid in their opening Champions League fixture. Losing again to Club Brugge leaves Chivu’s side with no points from their first two European matches and provisionally 28th in the league-phase standings.

The poor start also extends a worrying trend for the Italian side. Inter have now lost seven of their last eight Champions League matches, while their European campaign last season ended without qualification for the round of 16. With the competition becoming increasingly demanding, the club cannot afford many more setbacks.

Speaking after the defeat, Chivu admitted that his team had struggled to maintain its composure after conceding. The Romanian coach felt that frustration and impatience caused his players to abandon their tactical discipline, allowing Club Brugge to exploit the spaces left behind.

“A little frustration and too much haste led us to make mistakes. After the score became 2-1, we lost all our clarity, composure and game plan,” Chivu said, as quoted by Goal.

The Inter manager was particularly disappointed with the way his players approached the game after falling behind. Rather than maintaining their defensive shape while searching for an equaliser, they rushed forward and repeatedly left themselves vulnerable to counter-attacks.

“We were in too much of a hurry to attack without getting back to defend. Credit to Club Brugge for making things difficult for us,” he added.

Inter’s defensive record has become another source of concern. Chivu was asked about the 14 goals his team had conceded, and he admitted that the situation required serious attention, particularly when they fall behind in European competition.

“Can I say I am not worried about conceding 14 goals? No, I cannot. There are things we need to reassess, especially when we fall behind in the Champions League, because coming back is difficult given the quality and speed of our opponents,” Chivu explained.

The coach also highlighted the importance of winning second balls, maintaining balance across the pitch and improving the team’s pressing structure. In his view, Inter must become more disciplined both when attempting to recover possession and when responding to opposition attacks.

Despite the disappointing result, Chivu did not attempt to shift responsibility onto his players. Instead, he acknowledged that the team’s preparation and mentality remained areas he needed to address as head coach.

“We understand what is not working for us in the Champions League. We have worked to improve our mental preparation, but there are still things we are carrying with us, and I take responsibility for that,” he said.

Inter’s contrasting performances in domestic and European competition now present Chivu with a difficult challenge. Their strong Serie A form demonstrates that the squad possesses considerable quality, but the repeated defensive errors in Europe suggest that further improvements are needed.

For the Nerazzurri, the priority will be to restore their composure and rediscover the defensive balance that has been missing from their Champions League performances. Chivu has accepted responsibility for the latest setback, but his team’s response in the coming matches will determine whether Inter can revive their European campaign before the pressure intensifies further.
