Despite the Loss, Man City and PSG Are on Equal Footing
Manchester City manager Enzo Maresca remains convinced that his team can compete with Paris Saint-Germain at the highest level despite suffering a 4-2 defeat to the French champions in the second matchday of the UEFA Champions League.
The Sky Blues were beaten in front of their home supporters at the Etihad Stadium on Thursday, October 15, with PSG demonstrating their attacking quality to claim all three points. Despite the setback, Maresca believes City have the ability to challenge Europe’s strongest teams as they continue to develop under his leadership.
The encounter also attracted attention off the pitch, as former Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola attended the match as a spectator for the first time amid the club’s ongoing appeal in their financial case. Guardiola watched from the directors’ box alongside club president Khaldoon Al Mubarak, offering a show of support as City continue to contest the allegations against them.
On the pitch, PSG proved difficult to contain. Goals from Desire Doue, Ousmane Dembele, Vitinha and Maghnes Akliouche secured the visitors’ victory, while Erling Haaland responded with a second-half brace for Manchester City.
The result leaves City 17th in the Champions League league-phase standings with three points, while PSG sit at the top with six points from their opening two matches. For Maresca, the defeat was disappointing, but he believes the performance also offered valuable lessons as his side adapts to the demands of European competition.
Speaking after the match, the Italian praised PSG’s aggressive approach and high-intensity pressing. He acknowledged the quality of Luis Enrique’s side while insisting that City must learn from the experience and move forward rather than dwell on the result.
“I really enjoyed facing PSG. They are a very brave team, and you can see that in the way they press. They are fearless and extremely dynamic. Luis Enrique may feel they were fortunate, but we lost the game and now we have to move on,” Maresca said, as reported by the Daily Mail.
Maresca also apologised to Manchester City’s supporters after his team went into half-time trailing 3-0. However, he rejected suggestions that the players had become complacent following their emphatic 3-0 victory over Liverpool at Anfield the previous weekend.
Instead, the City manager stressed the importance of maintaining their concentration and competitive mentality when facing Europe’s elite. He believes the defeat exposed specific areas that require improvement, particularly the team’s positioning and the distances between players when defending against quick attacks.
“We can learn a lot from this match. Even though we conceded two quick goals against one of the best teams in Europe, we did some things well. Playing against PSG is always difficult. We lost our balance and the distances between our players were not right, which made things harder for us. But we have only been working together for three months, and there are many positive things ahead,” Maresca added.
The manager’s comments reflect his belief that City’s current struggles should be viewed within the broader context of a team still developing its identity. While the result against PSG highlighted the challenges of competing against established European contenders, Maresca remains confident that his players can improve as they gain experience under his guidance.
For City, the priority will now be to address their defensive shortcomings without losing the attacking intensity that helped them secure a convincing victory over Liverpool. The defeat against PSG has complicated their Champions League campaign, but Maresca insists that his squad possesses the quality required to compete at the highest level.
Ultimately, the result serves as a reminder of the fine margins that separate Europe’s leading clubs. PSG took their opportunities with greater efficiency, while City were punished for losing their defensive shape. Maresca will hope his players can learn from those mistakes and respond positively in their upcoming fixtures.
