Harry Kane has been crowned the 2026 Ballon d’Or winner, becoming the first English footballer to claim the prestigious individual award since Michael Owen in 2001. The Bayern Munich striker has now joined an elite group of English footballers to receive the honour, marking a major milestone in his remarkable career.

Despite England’s status as the birthplace of modern football, relatively few players from the country have won the Ballon d’Or. Previous English recipients include Stanley Matthews, Bobby Charlton, Kevin Keegan, who won the award twice, and Michael Owen. Kane has now added his name to that distinguished list.

The Bayern forward prevailed over some of the biggest names in world football to secure the award, finishing ahead of Kylian Mbappe, who came second, and Lamine Yamal, who placed third. Speaking after his triumph, Kane admitted that he had never imagined he would one day take home football’s most prestigious individual prize.

“My career has been full of ups and downs. I never imagined I would become a superstar like the people who are here. I’ve always worked hard and often had to fight battles within my own mind. However, I’ve always believed in my determination,” Kane said, as reported by DAZN.

Kane’s success reflects years of persistence and a determination to improve throughout his career. Rather than becoming complacent with his achievements, the England international has continued to push himself to reach new levels, and his performances over the past year have underlined the rewards of that approach.

His contribution to Bayern Munich’s success has been particularly significant. Kane helped the Bavarian giants secure a domestic double, winning both the Bundesliga and the DFB-Pokal. His individual goal-scoring record has also been exceptional, further strengthening his credentials for the Ballon d’Or.

Throughout the 2026 calendar year, Kane scored 61 goals for Bayern across all competitions. That tally matched Cristiano Ronaldo’s remarkable return of 61 goals for Real Madrid in a calendar year 11 years earlier, placing the Englishman alongside one of the most prolific forwards of the modern era.

Kane also made a substantial contribution to the England national team, scoring 12 goals, including six at the 2026 World Cup. His combined tally of 73 goals for club and country highlighted his extraordinary consistency in front of goal.

Even so, Kane’s achievement falls short of Lionel Messi’s remarkable record of 82 goals for Barcelona and Argentina during the 2011/12 season. Nevertheless, Kane’s own numbers demonstrate the scale of his attacking output and the importance of his contribution to both Bayern Munich and England.

For Kane, winning the Ballon d’Or represents the culmination of years of hard work, resilience and belief in his own abilities. Having finally secured football’s most coveted individual honour, he has cemented his place among the sport’s elite and ended England’s long wait for another winner since Owen’s triumph a quarter of a century ago.
