Inter Milan Set to Sign Third Englishman This Season

Liverpool midfielder Curtis Jones is reportedly on the verge of joining Inter Milan, with Cristian Chivu finally set to land one of his long-standing transfer targets.

Jones has been on Inter’s radar for some time, having emerged as a priority for Chivu since the January transfer window. The Inter head coach has long viewed the Liverpool academy graduate as a player capable of adding quality and versatility to his midfield.

According to Calciomercato, Inter have now reached an agreement with Liverpool over a €35 million transfer fee for the 25-year-old midfielder.

Jones is reportedly set to sign a five-year contract with the Nerazzurri. His salary is expected to be around €3.5 million per season, subject to the final details of the agreement.

Football Italia reports that Jones has been given permission to travel to Italy on Thursday, August 20, where he is expected to undergo his medical examination and complete the formalities of his transfer to Inter.

The move would bring an end to Jones’ long association with Liverpool. Having progressed through the club’s academy, the midfielder was promoted to the senior squad in 2020 and went on to establish himself as a regular member of the first-team setup.

Chivu has been particularly keen on bringing Jones to San Siro, believing his technical ability, physical qualities and versatility make him an ideal addition to Inter’s midfield.

The Nerazzurri had already attempted to sign Jones during the January transfer window. However, Liverpool were reluctant to consider his departure because Inter’s initial offer was below their €40 million valuation.

Inter also faced a squad-management issue at the time. With Davide Frattesi still part of the squad, there was limited space for another midfielder, making a deal for Jones more difficult to complete.

The situation has since changed following Frattesi’s move to Lazio on loan, with an option for the Serie A club to make the transfer permanent. His departure has opened up space in Inter’s midfield and allowed the club to accelerate their pursuit of Jones.

For Chivu, Jones’ expected arrival would represent the culmination of a pursuit that began months ago. For Inter, meanwhile, the England international could provide another dynamic option in midfield as they look to strengthen their squad ahead of the new season.
