Lazio will host AC Milan at the Stadio Olimpico on Saturday, September 12, in a highly anticipated Serie A clash between two teams yet to taste defeat in the league under Gennaro Gattuso and Ruben Amorim.

Lazio have made the stronger start of the two. The Biancocelesti have won all three of their opening Serie A matches, beating Bologna, Genoa and Udinese to establish themselves among the early pace-setters.

That run has helped ease the disappointment of their early Coppa Italia elimination and given Gattuso’s side considerable confidence ahead of their first major test against one of Italy’s traditional powers.

Milan have also enjoyed an unbeaten beginning under Amorim, although their record has been slightly less convincing. The Rossoneri defeated Torino and Venezia before drawing 1-1 with Juventus last weekend.

Milan looked on course to take all three points in Turin, only for Federico Gatti to score a late equaliser and deny them victory. Nevertheless, the performance provided encouragement that Amorim’s team can compete away from home against strong opposition.

The meeting at the Olimpico should therefore offer a fascinating tactical battle. Lazio demonstrated strong defensive organisation and discipline during their victory over Udinese, while Milan’s resilience against Juventus showed that they are becoming increasingly difficult to break down.

On paper, Milan may have the stronger squad and a slightly deeper pool of individual quality. They have also conceded just one goal across their last three league matches, suggesting Amorim has already begun to establish a solid defensive foundation.

Lazio, however, have one major advantage: their recent record against Milan at the Olimpico. The Biancocelesti have won their last two home meetings with the Rossoneri, including a 1-0 Serie A victory in March 2026 and another 1-0 triumph in the Coppa Italia earlier that season. Lazio also won 2-1 at San Siro in March 2025.

That history could give Gattuso’s side further confidence as they attempt to extend their perfect league start. The stakes are also high for both managers.

Gattuso will be hoping to maintain Lazio’s momentum and keep pace with city rivals AS Roma at the top of the table, while Amorim will be determined to preserve his unbeaten record and prevent Milan from dropping further points. Lazio are expected to rely on their organisation, intensity and home support, while Milan could attempt to exploit their greater attacking depth and technical quality.

Prediction

Milan may have the advantage in terms of squad depth, but Lazio’s perfect start and excellent recent record against the Rossoneri at the Olimpico make this a difficult fixture to call.

Gattuso’s team should be able to make the most of home advantage and could inflict Amorim’s first Serie A defeat of the season.
