Lothar Matthaus Backs Jonas Urbig to Succeed Manuel Neuer at Bayern Munich
Bayern Munich legend Lothar Matthaus believes Jonas Urbig has the potential to succeed Manuel Neuer as the club’s first-choice goalkeeper, although the young German may need to be patient before earning that responsibility.
Matthaus has been impressed by Urbig’s recent performances for Germany under head coach Jurgen Klopp. After watching the goalkeeper feature in two matches for Die Mannschaft, the 1990 World Cup winner has begun drawing comparisons between the Bayern youngster and a younger version of Neuer.
“After watching him play two matches under Klopp, I believe he represents a serious challenge to Neuer in the future. He can contribute to the build-up, has good movement and reads crosses well. I see a young Manuel Neuer in him,” Matthaus said, as reported by Bavarian Football Works.
At 40, Neuer remains Bayern’s undisputed first-choice goalkeeper, but the question of succession is becoming increasingly important for the Bundesliga champions. Matthaus believes the club must prepare for the veteran’s eventual departure, and Urbig could be the ideal candidate to take over.
The 22-year-old has gradually become more involved with Bayern’s senior team. After gaining valuable experience last season, he has continued to feature in the first-team setup during the current campaign, giving him opportunities to demonstrate that he can eventually handle the demands of being Bayern’s number one.
However, Matthaus believes Urbig’s development will depend largely on receiving regular playing time under Vincent Kompany. Competing with a goalkeeper of Neuer’s experience and pedigree is difficult, but consistent opportunities could help the youngster make the next step in his career.
Matthaus also sees a potential international future for Urbig. With Germany continuing to assess their goalkeeping options ahead of Euro 2028, the Bayern prospect could eventually challenge Marc-Andre ter Stegen for a place in the national team’s starting lineup.
“If he gets enough playing time at Bayern under Vincent Kompany, he could also compete with Ter Stegen for the starting position at Euro 2028,” Matthaus added.
Urbig has already featured in the Bundesliga and DFB-Pokal this season, completing two full appearances across the competitions. He has conceded two goals in those matches, but Matthaus believes the young goalkeeper’s overall qualities suggest he has the potential to develop into a top-level player.
For Bayern, the priority will be balancing Neuer’s continued importance with the need to prepare a successor for the future. Urbig still has work to do before he can displace the veteran, but Matthaus’ assessment suggests the club may already have a promising long-term solution within its own ranks.
