Man United Legend Weighs In on Man City Case and Potential Punishment
Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney has given his view on the case involving local rivals Manchester City, suggesting the Premier League could take severe action if the club is ultimately found to have committed the alleged financial breaches.
According to the Premier League’s official statement, Manchester City were found to have breached competition rules relating to commercial agreements between 2009 and 2018. The club were accused of using so-called false contracts with commercial partners and illegally channeling £900 million into their operations.
The decision has triggered widespread speculation over the potential consequences for City, including whether titles won during the period in question could eventually be revoked. However, no such punishment has been imposed at this stage, with the club retaining the right to appeal the decision by Friday, October 2.
The Premier League has said it wants the entire process, including any appeal and the publication of the final decision, to be completed as quickly as possible.
Rooney, who experienced first-hand the disappointment of finishing behind City in the title race, believes the Premier League should consider a severe sporting punishment if the club’s breaches are upheld.
The former England international was part of the Manchester United side that finished runners-up to City in the dramatic 2011/12 Premier League campaign. City secured the title on the final day with a last-gasp comeback against Queens Park Rangers.
Speaking about what punishment he would impose, Rooney proposed relegation combined with financial restrictions.
“I would put them in the lowest league they are allowed to play in and then impose restrictions on how much money they can spend for the next three or four seasons,” Rooney said.
“If you only put them in the Championship, and I understand that would be a very severe punishment, they would probably come straight back up. But if you put restrictions on them, send them to League Two or wherever, it could make things extremely difficult for them,” he added.
Rooney’s comments highlight the scale of the potential consequences being discussed around the City case. However, any final sporting sanctions will depend on the outcome of the appeal process and the Premier League’s eventual ruling.
