Napoli will host Arsenal in the opening matchday of the 2026/27 Champions League at the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium on Thursday, September 10. The two sides head into the fixture in contrasting domestic form, although Napoli could still have a realistic chance of stopping the Gunners’ impressive early-season run.

Arsenal have enjoyed an excellent start to the campaign since beating Manchester City in the Community Shield. Mikel Arteta’s side have won all three of their Premier League matches so far, with Chelsea providing their latest test before Arsenal secured another positive result at the weekend. Napoli, meanwhile, have endured a much more difficult spell.

Massimiliano Allegri’s team opened their Serie A campaign with a 2-0 victory over Genoa but have since suffered consecutive defeats against Como and Inter Milan. Rasmus Hojlund and his teammates therefore arrive at their European opener under pressure to avoid a third successive defeat across all competitions.

That makes the Champions League encounter particularly important for the Partenopei. A strong performance against Arsenal could provide the response Napoli need after their disappointing domestic results.

History, however, offers encouragement to the visitors. Arsenal have an impressive record in their Champions League opening fixtures. Across their last nine matches on matchday one, the Gunners have recorded seven victories and two draws, meaning they have yet to lose an opener in that sequence.

Arsenal also have positive memories of playing in Naples. Their most recent Champions League meeting at the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium came in 2019, when the Gunners secured a 1-0 victory.

Napoli can draw confidence from another encounter between the clubs, though. In 2013, the Italian side defeated Arsenal 2-0 at home, demonstrating that the atmosphere in Naples can make life difficult even for Europe’s strongest teams.

That could become important for Allegri’s side. Despite their narrow defeat to Inter last weekend, Napoli showed enough resilience to suggest they can still make this a competitive contest if they remain organised and disciplined.

A deep defensive structure and quick transitions could be central to Napoli’s approach. The Partenopei may look to replicate aspects of the strategy they used against Inter, limiting Arsenal’s space before attempting to exploit openings on the counter.

Arsenal, meanwhile, will be confident that their superior momentum and attacking quality can eventually break Napoli down. The Gunners have consistently demonstrated an ability to start matches aggressively and maintain pressure for long periods.

The outcome could therefore depend heavily on Napoli’s ability to absorb that pressure without conceding early. If Allegri’s side can stay compact and frustrate Arsenal, the possibility of securing at least a point becomes significantly more realistic.

Prediction

Arsenal come into the match as the stronger side based on their current form, but Napoli’s home advantage and the tactical discipline expected under Allegri could make this a difficult night for the visitors.

The Partenopei are likely to prioritise defensive organisation and counterattacking opportunities, while Arsenal should control much of the possession. A narrow draw is therefore a plausible outcome if Napoli can withstand the Gunners’ pressure.

Prediction: Napoli 1-1 Arsenal.
