Simeone Gives Special Credit to David After Leading Atlético to Victory
Atletico Madrid head coach Diego Simeone has praised Jonathan David for his composed finishing after the Canada international scored his first goal for the club in a 3-0 victory over Real Sociedad at the Reale Arena.
Atletico struggled to break through a stubborn Real Sociedad defence for most of the match. The hosts managed to hold Simeone’s side at bay until the 84th minute, when Alejandro Grimaldo finally broke the deadlock from the penalty spot.
David, who had been introduced during the second half, then doubled Atletico’s advantage in the 90th minute before Giuliano Simeone added a third in stoppage time. The result gave Atletico a valuable away victory, although Simeone acknowledged that the scoreline did not fully reflect how closely contested the match had been.
“Winning is always the most important thing. It was a difficult game. The final score does not really reflect how intense the battle on the pitch was,” Simeone said.
David was one of three players introduced by Simeone after half-time, and the changes ultimately transformed the game. The Argentine coach explained that his decision to leave the new signing on the bench was based primarily on the forward’s need for further adaptation and the chemistry already established between other attacking players.
“I told Jonathan that he wasn’t starting because Ademola Lookman and Lee Kang-in have been playing together more often. But when he was given the chance to come on, he was outstanding,” Simeone explained.
“Jonathan gave us a better rhythm, allowed us to press higher and made our transitions much smoother.”
The comments underline the qualities Simeone believes David can bring to Atletico. Rather than simply providing another goalscoring option, the former Lille and Napoli forward can add intensity to the pressing game while offering greater movement during attacking transitions.
His arrival is particularly timely for Atletico, who have been short of options in attack because of the absences of Julian Alvarez and Alexander Sorloth.
Simeone therefore sees David as more than a temporary solution. The Canada international provides additional depth and gives Atletico another attacking profile as they attempt to navigate a demanding schedule.
David, meanwhile, admitted that he still needs time to fully adapt after arriving at Atletico on deadline day. His first goal, however, provides an encouraging indication of what he could offer once he becomes more familiar with Simeone’s system.
After an initially frustrating evening, Atletico eventually secured a comfortable victory. For Simeone, the most encouraging aspect may have been the impact of his new additions — with David’s composed finish providing the clearest sign yet that the forward could become an important part of Atletico’s attack.
