UEFA is reportedly planning to remove current FIFA President Gianni Infantino by introducing a new system for electing the FIFA president.

Relations between Gianni Infantino and UEFA appear to have reached a breaking point. Following several controversies, including the surprising overturning of a red-card decision involving United States national team striker Folarin Balogun, as well as FIFA’s plans to establish FIFA Forward Enterprise (FFE), UEFA appears increasingly determined to see Infantino leave office.

According to The Independent, UEFA is reportedly considering a plan to oust Gianni Infantino as FIFA president. The organization is also exploring a new presidential election system.

Under the proposed system, the FIFA presidency would be allocated on a rotating basis among its confederations. This would mean that UEFA, AFC, CONCACAF, CONMEBOL, CAF, and the OFC could each have the opportunity to provide the FIFA president.

The proposal was reportedly presented by UEFA in Salzburg, Austria, where FIFA and UEFA officials were both present ahead of the UEFA Super Cup. A similar rotating leadership system is commonly used by some continental and international organizations, including institutions within the European Union.

However, Gianni Infantino continues to enjoy support from many countries, including Indonesia. Indonesian Football Association (PSSI) Chairman and Youth and Sports Minister Erick Thohir has openly expressed his support for Infantino to serve as FIFA president for four terms.

Erick Thohir believes Indonesian football has received greater attention under Infantino’s leadership. Indonesia has hosted the 2023 FIFA U-17 World Cup and was selected to host the 2026 FIFA Series and the 2026 FIFA ASEAN Cup.

“I believe FIFA will continue to be an organization that serves all Member Associations, strengthens solidarity, and promotes the development of football so that it can have a positive impact on communities around the world,” Erick Thohir said in a post on his personal Instagram account.
