Boehly Leaves Chelsea Chairmanship as Clearlake Takes Full Control of Club

Chelsea have officially announced a major change to the club’s ownership structure, with Todd Boehly stepping down as Chairman and relinquishing his stake in the Premier League club.

According to an official statement from Chelsea, an affiliate of Clearlake Capital Group, L.P. (Clearlake) will acquire Boehly’s ownership interest in the club. Clearlake will also take over Mark Walter’s stake, giving the investment group full control of Chelsea. Hansjorg Wyss, meanwhile, will remain a shareholder and an important partner within the club’s ownership group.

The restructuring brings an end to the ownership partnership between Boehly and Clearlake that began in 2022. The pair joined forces to lead the takeover of Chelsea during a period of considerable uncertainty surrounding the club amid wider external political developments.

During their period of shared ownership, Chelsea made significant investments across several areas of the club. Those commitments included the men’s and women’s first teams, the academy, the Cobham training centre, medical facilities and player support, as well as the development of pathways for young players.

Boehly also carried out his responsibilities as Chairman with a stated commitment to keeping Chelsea supporters at the centre of the club’s decision-making process.

His departure now marks the end of a four-year period at the helm, with Chelsea described as being in a strong position to enter the next stage of their development. Clearlake is expected to continue the broader strategy established during the partnership over the past four years.

Boehly said it had been a privilege to serve as Chairman of Chelsea and expressed his gratitude to those who supported the club throughout his tenure.

“It has been an honour to serve as Chairman of Chelsea Football Club. I would like to thank the many people who have helped to secure a bright future for the club, including the English Premier League, our coaches and players, the Chelsea leadership team and staff, and all of our loyal supporters,” Boehly said.

“I value my partnership with Clearlake and the other members of the ownership group, as well as the collective decisions and investments we have made to support the club’s short- and long-term success.”

“I am confident that Chelsea are well positioned to achieve sustained success under the leadership of Clearlake,” he added.

Clearlake Capital co-founders Behdad Eghbali and Jose E. Feliciano also paid tribute to Boehly and acknowledged his contribution during his time as part of Chelsea’s ownership group.

“Todd has been an important partner throughout our ownership of Chelsea. We are grateful for his time and contributions as Chairman. He will always be part of Chelsea’s story and family,” they said.

The ownership change represents a significant new chapter for Chelsea, with Clearlake now assuming full control of the club while continuing the long-term strategy developed since the 2022 takeover.
