Valencia have completed another move in the summer transfer market, officially announcing the signing of Pablo Maffeo from Olympiacos to strengthen their defence.

The Spanish club have reached an agreement with Olympiacos for Maffeo’s arrival on a season-long loan. The deal also includes an option for Valencia to make the transfer permanent, potentially extending his stay at Mestalla for a further two seasons.

Maffeo’s move has attracted considerable attention in Spanish football given the extraordinary sequence of events surrounding his future over the past few months.

The 29-year-old became a highly sought-after player following Mallorca’s relegation to the Segunda Division at the end of last season. Several clubs reportedly expressed an interest in signing the Argentina international, who had established himself as an important figure in La Liga.

Olympiacos ultimately moved fastest, securing Maffeo’s signature in mid-June. The Greek giants handed him a three-year contract running until the summer of 2029, with the defender seemingly set to begin a new chapter in Piraeus.

However, his time in Greece proved remarkably brief.

Just two months after signing for Olympiacos, Maffeo has unexpectedly returned to Spain after Valencia reached an agreement to bring him back to La Liga. The move represents a dramatic change in direction for a player who appeared destined to spend several years in Greece.

Valencia, now managed by Carlos Corberan, have moved quickly to secure the defender and could immediately hand him an important role within the squad.

Maffeo is expected to compete for, and potentially establish himself as, Valencia’s first-choice option at right-back. His experience at the highest level of Spanish football should provide valuable depth and reliability to Corberan’s defensive unit.

The Valencia hierarchy will also be hoping that Maffeo’s combative style and experience can add greater resilience to a squad preparing for another demanding La Liga campaign.

After one of the most eventful transfer sagas of the summer, Maffeo now has the opportunity to settle back in Spain and become an important part of Valencia’s plans at Mestalla.
