Andoni Iraola Praises Liverpool’s Character After Atletico Madrid Comeback
Liverpool began their Champions League campaign with a 2-1 victory over Atletico Madrid at Anfield on Thursday, with manager Andoni Iraola praising his players for showing character after falling behind early in the contest.
Atletico took the lead through Marcos Llorente, but Liverpool responded strongly after the interval. Goals from Dominik Szoboszlai and Alexis Mac Allister turned the game around and secured three valuable points for the Reds.
Iraola admitted that Liverpool struggled to find their rhythm during the opening stages, particularly because of Atletico’s defensive setup. Diego Simeone’s side operated with a 5-3-2 formation, making it difficult for the hosts to find space and build sustained attacks.
The Spanish coach, however, was pleased with the way his players gradually adapted and improved as the match progressed.
“After half-time, we performed better and became the better team. I’m happy with this atmosphere. It was incredible, and I feel fortunate to experience a moment like this,” Iraola said, as quoted by the BBC.
The Liverpool manager also praised the contributions of Szoboszlai and Mac Allister, whose efforts ultimately proved decisive. Szoboszlai provided the response Liverpool needed by levelling the match, before Mac Allister completed the comeback with the winning goal.
Iraola was particularly impressed by Mac Allister’s mentality. The Argentina international had already been booked, and Atletico players appeared to be attempting to provoke him into committing another offence that could have resulted in a second yellow card.
Instead, Mac Allister remained disciplined and continued to contribute to Liverpool’s efforts to secure the victory. The result gives Liverpool an ideal platform from which to begin their European campaign. More importantly, the comeback demonstrated that Iraola’s team are developing the resilience needed to overcome difficult situations against high-level opposition.
Liverpool will now return their attention to the Premier League, where they face Fulham in their fourth league fixture of the season on Saturday, September 12. After overcoming Atletico, Iraola will hope his side can carry the same intensity and determination into their next domestic challenge.
