Dortmund’s Next Generation: Why Karetsas and Gadou Could Become Future Stars
Borussia Dortmund have once again invested heavily in young talent, with several promising players arriving during the summer transfer window to strengthen Niko Kovac’s squad. Among the newcomers, Konstantinos Karetsas and Joane Gadou have already shown early signs that they could become important figures for the club in the years ahead.
Dortmund have built a reputation for developing young players into elite stars, whether they emerge from the club’s academy or arrive from elsewhere before being refined into top-level performers. The likes of Mario Gotze, Ousmane Dembele, Erling Haaland and Jude Bellingham all followed versions of that pathway before establishing themselves on the biggest stages in European football.
Karetsas and Gadou are now being lined up as the latest prospects to continue that tradition.
Both players made encouraging impressions during the opening Bundesliga fixture. Despite their young age, each offered qualities that could potentially complement Dortmund’s existing structure, with Karetsas providing an additional creative dimension in attack while Gadou displayed the physical attributes needed to strengthen the defence.
Karetsas, in particular, immediately demonstrated why Dortmund were keen to bring him to Germany. Against Hamburg, the attacking midfielder played an important role in the build-up to Sehrou Guirassy’s goal, showcasing his ability to create opportunities from deeper areas.
His performance offered glimpses of a quality that Dortmund have previously valued in players such as Marco Reus: the ability to operate between the lines and contribute when the team needs an additional source of creativity from midfield.
That comparison is naturally premature, but Karetsas’ early influence suggests Dortmund may have found another technically gifted player capable of developing into a significant attacking contributor.
Gadou offers a very different profile.
The defender had been linked with Dortmund for an extended period before finally completing his move during the summer. Standing at close to two metres, the France youth international possesses a clear physical advantage, particularly in aerial duels and defending set pieces.
His presence could prove useful within Kovac’s preferred three-man defensive structure. A physically dominant centre-back in the middle of the back three could provide greater security while allowing Julian Ryerson to push further forward and contribute more aggressively in attack.
That additional tactical flexibility could become particularly valuable as Dortmund navigate a demanding campaign. Gadou’s physical presence and Karetsas’ creativity could therefore provide Kovac with two contrasting tools as he looks to shape his squad around a younger generation.
Neither player, however, can yet be considered a finished product.
Dortmund’s most successful young players have often required time before becoming established stars, and Karetsas and Gadou will face the same challenge. Their early Bundesliga performances are encouraging, but sustained consistency at the highest level will ultimately determine whether they can follow in the footsteps of Dortmund’s celebrated alumni.
For now, the signs are promising.
Dortmund appear to have identified two young players with complementary qualities and significant long-term potential. Whether Karetsas becomes another creative star at Signal Iduna Park or Gadou develops into the defensive cornerstone the club envision will take time to determine, but the first indications suggest that Dortmund’s next generation is already beginning to take shape.
