Ipswich Town are reportedly preparing to send new goalkeeper Kayne van Oevelen out on loan to Valencia, just weeks after completing his permanent transfer from FC Volendam.

Ipswich signed the 23-year-old Dutch goalkeeper earlier this summer for a reported €4 million. Van Oevelen subsequently agreed to a five-year contract with the Premier League club, but his immediate future appears to lie away from Portman Road.

On Sunday, August 23, Van Oevelen arrived in Spain to undergo a medical ahead of a season-long loan move to Valencia.

The transfer could have been completed several days earlier, but Ipswich delayed his departure because of an injury situation within their goalkeeping department. Manager Gary O’Neil subsequently made it clear that the issue would not prevent the planned move from going ahead.

Van Oevelen remains part of Ipswich’s long-term plans, but the pathway to first-team football is currently limited. A temporary move to Valencia would therefore allow the young goalkeeper to gain valuable experience and regular playing time at a high level.

Interestingly, Valencia had previously considered signing Van Oevelen directly from Volendam. However, the Spanish club were unable to reach an agreement with the Dutch side over the transfer fee.

That opportunity has now returned in the form of a loan deal.

“I’m happy to be here. Valencia are a big club. I have spoken with the coach, Carlos Corberan, and he convinced me to come. I hope I can help the team,” Van Oevelen said, as quoted by Diario AS.

At Mestalla, Van Oevelen is expected to compete for the starting goalkeeper position and provide a new option for Corberan as Valencia prepare for another demanding La Liga campaign.

The position was occupied by Stole Dimitrievski last season. The North Macedonia international made 34 appearances, conceding 40 goals while keeping 11 clean sheets.

For Van Oevelen, the loan move represents an opportunity to make the next step in his development. Rather than spending another season waiting for regular opportunities at Ipswich, the Dutchman will now have the chance to prove himself in Spain and potentially return to England as a more experienced goalkeeper.

For Valencia, meanwhile, the deal provides a relatively low-risk way of adding a promising goalkeeper after their initial attempt to sign Van Oevelen permanently from Volendam fell through.
