Lisandro Martinez Criticises Manchester United Hierarchy After Atletico Madrid Defeat
Manchester United defender Lisandro Martinez has launched a scathing assessment of the club’s hierarchy following their disappointing 2-0 defeat to Atletico Madrid in the second matchday of the 2026/27 UEFA Champions League. The Argentine centre-back expressed frustration with technical director Jason Wilcox, arguing that the club needed greater investment to compete at Europe’s highest level.
United suffered another setback at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano on Wednesday, October 14, as Atletico claimed a convincing victory in front of their home supporters. Pablo Barrios opened the scoring in the first minute, before Ademola Lookman sealed the result with a second goal in the 79th minute.
The defeat left Martinez deeply frustrated, but his criticism was directed beyond the players’ performance and head coach Michael Carrick’s tactics. Instead, the defender questioned the club’s recruitment strategy and the work being done behind the scenes to build a squad capable of challenging Europe’s elite.
Martinez believes Wilcox must take greater responsibility for ensuring Manchester United have the quality and depth required to compete in the Champions League. He also expressed disappointment with the club’s transfer business, arguing that the additions made during the current campaign have not been sufficient to close the gap on their European rivals.
“Yes, I expected more from our technical director. I am being honest about that. I expected greater investment,” Martinez said, as reported by Goal.
The Argentine’s remarks reflected his broader concerns about United’s current standing in European football. He described the team’s display in Madrid as extremely poor and suggested that the defeat exposed deeper problems within the club.
“Our performance was poor, very poor. I have to hold myself back. This reflects the situation our club is in right now. This is not a club operating at Champions League level,” Martinez added.
United have brought in three new players this season: Carlos Baleba, Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans. However, Martinez believes the club needed to do more in the transfer market, particularly when competing against teams that have strengthened their squads significantly.
“Last season, we performed fantastically, and now we expect more from the people at the top of the club. We need signings who can help us compete because many other teams have also brought in a lot of players,” he explained.
Despite his criticism of the hierarchy, Martinez acknowledged that the players themselves must also accept responsibility for the disappointing result. He insisted that stronger recruitment must go hand in hand with better performances from those already at the club.
“I have to be honest: as players, we also need to do more. But it is equally important to have a strong squad that is ready to compete on nights like this,” the defender added.
Martinez’s comments highlight the growing frustration surrounding Manchester United as they struggle to establish themselves among Europe’s leading clubs. The defeat to Atletico has intensified scrutiny of both the team’s performances and the decisions being made behind the scenes, with questions emerging over whether the current squad has the necessary quality to compete consistently at the highest level.
For Carrick and the United hierarchy, the immediate challenge will be to respond to the setback on the pitch while addressing the concerns raised by one of their senior players. Martinez’s blunt assessment serves as a reminder that improving results may require more than tactical adjustments alone, with squad investment and recruitment strategy also coming under the spotlight.
