Karetsas Suffers Injury Scare on Champions League Debut for Borussia Dortmund
Borussia Dortmund youngster Konstantinos Karetsas endured a difficult Champions League debut after being forced off early during the 3-2 victory over Villarreal on Wednesday night.
Karetsas was withdrawn in the 27th minute after suddenly sitting down on the pitch and appearing to experience discomfort. The match against Villarreal was the 18-year-old’s first Champions League appearance of the season with Dortmund.
Initial reports indicate that Karetsas was affected by a circulation problem. Dortmund’s medical staff are now assessing the situation and determining the severity of the issue, with the club confirming that the midfielder was unable to continue because of the discomfort he experienced.
Karetsas has since been taken to hospital for further examination and treatment. Dortmund’s medical team have yet to provide a definitive update on his condition, and the teenager is expected to miss several training sessions while he undergoes further recovery and assessment.
The incident is particularly unfortunate given Karetsas’ difficult start to life in Dortmund. The former KRC Genk player only joined the Bundesliga club in August and had already suffered an ACL injury during the build-up to the campaign. That setback ruled him out for a period and contributed to Dortmund’s decision to bring in Arsenal youngster Ethan Nwaneri on loan as additional attacking cover.
Nwaneri was once again called upon after Karetsas was forced off against Villarreal. The England international replaced his injured teammate as Dortmund eventually secured a memorable 3-2 victory. Serhou Guirassy played a decisive role in the result, scoring twice to help Dortmund claim their first Champions League victory of the campaign.
More importantly, the result marked Dortmund’s first Champions League win this season as representatives of Germany. However, the victory was overshadowed by concerns surrounding Karetsas. For Dortmund, the immediate priority will be ensuring that the young Greek receives the appropriate medical treatment before determining when he can return to training.
With the midfielder having already endured one significant injury since joining the club, another spell on the sidelines would represent another setback in his development. The full extent of Karetsas’ latest problem remains unclear, and Dortmund are expected to provide a further update once the medical examinations have been completed.
