Persita vs Persija Marred by Fan Unrest, Shin Tae-yong Expresses Outrage
The match between Persita Tangerang and Persija Jakarta was temporarily delayed due to spectator violence, an incident that left head coach Shin Tae-yong deeply infuriated.
In a thrilling BRI Super League 2026/27 fixture held at the Banten International Stadium (BIS) on Saturday (17/10), Persita narrowly defeated Persija with a 3-2 victory. Both sides delivered a highly entertaining performance on the pitch.
The contest was fiercely fought from the opening whistle. Persita took an early lead through a quick strike from Luquinhas, though Fabio Calonego managed to equalize, keeping the score tied at 1-1 by halftime.
However, the start of the second half was delayed for approximately 30 minutes following clashes between rival supporter groups in the stands.
Once the situation was brought under control, play resumed. Both teams continued to trade goals in a high-stakes back-and-forth battle, with Persita ultimately emerging victorious.
Persija head coach Shin Tae-yong specifically addressed the fan riot, expressing his frustration and bewilderment over the incident.
“We are all part of the same nation and the same people. I truly cannot comprehend why people come to watch sports and support their favorite teams, only to end up getting into fights,” said the coach, popularly known as STY.
“We all need to exercise self-control in these situations. Only then can the players perform well and create a positive atmosphere.”
Supporter unrest has long plagued Indonesian football, serving as the primary reason behind the implementation of the away-fan ban.
Nevertheless, STY emphasized that the presence of both fanbases remains vital to the sport, as it creates an electric matchday atmosphere.
“Professional matches truly need spectators, whether for home or away games. I firmly believe their presence is crucial, but cheering should never cross the line,” he added.
“I sincerely hope everyone can show a bit more self-restraint.”
