Tresoldi Yet to Decide Between Italy and Germany at Senior International Level

Club Brugge striker Nicolo Tresoldi remains eligible to represent either Italy or Germany at senior international level, but the 22-year-old has yet to make a final decision over his international future.

Tresoldi previously established himself as an important figure for Germany Under-21s, becoming one of their most reliable goalscorers. He has scored 12 goals in 24 appearances across competitions for the Young Germany side, but his impressive record has not yet convinced him to commit his senior career to the country.

The uncertainty is understandable given Tresoldi’s background. He was born in Cagliari to an Italian father and an Argentine mother, giving him a strong connection to Italy despite spending much of his development in Germany.

Tresoldi moved to Germany at the age of 13 and continued his football education with Hannover 96. His years living in the country also saw him acquire German citizenship, further strengthening his eligibility to represent the German national team.

The situation has now left both Germany and Italy as potential destinations for his senior international career. Tresoldi was not included in the latest Nations League squads selected by Jurgen Klopp for Germany or Roberto Mancini for Italy, giving him additional time to consider his options before making a definitive choice.

Germany Under-21 head coach Antonio Di Salvo believes Tresoldi is still weighing up his decision and should be given the necessary time to do so. Di Salvo also stressed that the final decision must ultimately come from the player himself.

“I think the world has changed. Twenty or 30 years ago, a player didn’t have to make a decision like this. But the world has become increasingly global, and many players now have the opportunity to play for different countries,” Di Salvo told Kicker.

“So they need time, and you have to give them that.”

Tresoldi’s long involvement with German youth football could potentially work in the country’s favour. His consistent commitment to Germany’s youth teams has established a strong connection, although Di Salvo has made it clear that the striker remains free to determine his own international path.

At club level, Tresoldi has also attracted attention beyond Belgium. The striker was reportedly linked with Barcelona during the summer transfer window, although the move ultimately failed to materialise.

He remains under contract with Club Brugge until 2029 and has made an encouraging start to the current campaign. Tresoldi has scored five goals in nine appearances across all competitions, further increasing his profile as he continues to develop.

For now, however, his biggest decision remains off the pitch. Tresoldi must eventually choose between Italy and Germany, with both nations monitoring a young forward who continues to strengthen his case through his performances at club level.
