Indonesia face Bangladesh in their final Group A fixture of the FIFA ASEAN Cup 2026 on Thursday, October 1, with their hopes of reaching the final hanging in the balance.
The decisive encounter will take place at the Gelora Bung Karno Stadium in Jakarta. Indonesia currently have four points from two matches and sit second in Group A behind Malaysia, who also have four points but hold the advantage on goal difference.
The qualification picture is relatively straightforward. Indonesia must beat Bangladesh to move to seven points, but they also need a favourable result in Malaysia’s final group match to finish top. A Malaysia draw would leave the Harimau Malaya on five points, meaning an Indonesia victory would send the Garuda through as group winners. The same would apply if Malaysia lose, as they would remain on four points.
However, if Malaysia win, they would also reach seven points, leaving the group to be decided by the applicable tiebreaker if both teams finish level. In that scenario, Indonesia would need to overcome Malaysia’s current advantage, with goal difference potentially becoming decisive.
There is also little room for Indonesia to drop points. A draw against Bangladesh would take them to five points, meaning Malaysia would have to lose for Indonesia to have a chance of finishing first. A defeat would leave Indonesia on four points and put their hopes of reaching the final in serious jeopardy.
Indonesia’s position became more complicated after they were held to a goalless draw by Malaysia on Monday, September 28. With both sides currently level on four points, the final round will determine which team finishes at the top of the group.
Bangladesh, meanwhile, have already seen their hopes of reaching the final disappear. They have failed to collect a single point or score a goal in their opening two matches, leaving Thomas Dooley’s team rooted to fourth place in the group.
For John Herdman, the biggest challenge will be reshaping his midfield after Thom Haye was sent off against Malaysia. The influential midfielder will therefore be suspended for the crucial encounter, forcing the Canada-born coach to find an alternative partner for Joey Pelupessy.
Rizky Ridho could return to the starting lineup after being left out against Malaysia. The Persija Jakarta captain is expected to line up alongside Elkan Baggott and Justin Hubner in defence, potentially allowing Kevin Diks to operate in a more advanced wing-back role on the right.
With Haye unavailable, Ivar Jenner could be the most likely candidate to join Pelupessy in central midfield. Herdman could also consider Rayhan Hannan as an alternative on the wing if he wants to introduce more attacking energy against a Bangladesh side expected to defend compactly.
