Calvin Verdonk Helps Lille Salvage a Draw Against Brest
LOSC Lille failed to secure a victory against Brest in Matchday 7 of the 2026/27 Ligue 1 season. However, Calvin Verdonk’s introduction in the second half made a noticeable impact, helping his side avoid defeat.
Verdonk came on in the 54th minute with Lille trailing by a goal, following Mama Baldé’s early strike in the 6th minute. Operating on the left flank, the Indonesian international immediately energized the team’s play, and Lille eventually leveled the score in the 64th minute through an Olivier Giroud penalty.
With the score tied at 1–1, the match turned increasingly fierce. Verdonk took a tactical yellow card in the 90th minute to halt a dangerous attack, sacrificing himself for the team. The 1–1 stalemate remained intact until the final whistle.
LOSC Lille head coach Davide Ancelotti admitted that his squad was slightly nervous early in the game. He noted that their lack of focus early on was capitalized on by the opposition, though the team responded with a much improved attacking display afterward.
“We feel frustrated. It’s true that the match didn’t start well due to a lack of concentration. But in the second half, we reacted with more determination in the final third. I’m quite pleased with our second-half performance,” Ancelotti stated.
“We won back possession and pressed high whenever we lost the ball. In the end, we salvaged a point. We did some good things, but the frustration of not winning remains—especially given the chances we had late in the game,” he added.
Ancelotti further highlighted several key takeaways from the draw, including player fitness and stamina. Nevertheless, he expressed satisfaction with the team’s tactical progress in both defense and attack.
“Defensively, I think we now have a level of stability that we lacked at the start of the season. Attacking-wise, tonight we managed to press a bit higher up the pitch compared to the Le Havre match. Still, there is room for improvement in this area,”
“We were a bit lacking in energy today. It is clear that having only one fit striker makes things difficult, but we will keep working to find solutions,” Ancelotti concluded.
