PSG vs Lyon at Risk of Postponement Amid Unrest in Paris
Paris Saint-Germain’s Ligue 1 Matchweek Eight fixture against Olympique Lyonnais at the Parc des Princes could be postponed amid escalating unrest across France. The match, scheduled for Sunday evening, is facing uncertainty over security concerns following a wave of demonstrations that has resulted in riots and looting in several parts of the country, including Paris.
The situation has already affected other Ligue 1 clubs. Olympique Marseille and Lille OSC have temporarily closed their club shops after becoming targets of vandalism and looting. With concerns growing over public safety, authorities are now considering whether Sunday’s meeting between PSG and Lyon can go ahead as planned.
The fixture is scheduled to kick off at 8.45 pm local time on Sunday, but the potential security risks have prompted the Paris police to recommend postponement to the Professional Football League (LFP), which oversees France’s professional football competitions.
Representatives from the police and the LFP held discussions on Wednesday to assess the situation. The recommendation to postpone the match has also gained weight following plans for further demonstrations across the French capital on Saturday, raising concerns about the security arrangements required for the game.
Other French Football Fixtures Already Rescheduled
The uncertainty surrounding PSG’s match against Lyon comes as other fixtures in French football have already been affected.
Toulouse FC’s encounter with ESTAC Troyes, originally scheduled for Saturday, has officially been moved to Sunday. Changes have also been made in Ligue 2, where Montpellier HSC’s match against Red Star has been rescheduled from Sunday to Monday.
These adjustments highlight the growing challenges facing French football authorities as they attempt to balance the domestic calendar with public safety considerations.
PSG vs Lyon Could Clash With Ballon d’Or Ceremony
One possible solution would be to move PSG’s match against Lyon to Monday. However, that would place the fixture on the same day as the Ballon d’Or ceremony, creating a scheduling conflict with one of football’s most prestigious annual events.
Such a scenario would mirror last season, when the Le Classique meeting between Marseille and PSG coincided with the Ballon d’Or ceremony. On that occasion, Marseille suffered defeat against PSG, while Ousmane Dembele took home the prestigious individual award.
For now, the final decision regarding PSG’s meeting with Lyon remains pending. The LFP must weigh the security risks against the scheduling implications of moving the fixture, with the situation in Paris likely to be a decisive factor in determining whether the match proceeds as planned or is postponed.
