Carrick Unfazed by Pressure as Manchester United Suffer Stunning Brighton Defeat

Manchester United’s difficult start to the season took another damaging turn as they suffered a stunning defeat to Brighton & Hove Albion in the Carabao Cup third round. Despite another disappointing result, head coach Michael Carrick insists he is not feeling under pressure over the club’s current struggles.

United appeared to be in control at Old Trafford on Thursday morning WIB after Shea Lacey and Mason Mount put the hosts two goals ahead. However, Brighton produced a remarkable comeback, with Charalampos Kostoulas, Pascal Gross and Maxim De Cuyper all finding the net to complete a 3-2 victory for the Seagulls.

The result represents another major setback for United, particularly given the manner in which they surrendered a two-goal advantage on home soil. It also adds to the growing scrutiny surrounding Carrick’s tenure as he attempts to steer the club through a difficult period.

United had already suffered a painful defeat against Manchester City at the weekend, despite Pep Guardiola’s side playing with 10 men for much of the match following Phil Foden’s early red card. Carrick had hoped his players would respond against Brighton, but his plans failed to materialise as the visitors turned the game on its head.

Since taking over from Ruben Amorim in January, Carrick has struggled to produce consistent results. United have already suffered three defeats this season, surpassing the number of losses recorded during the early stages of his initial spell in charge.

Nevertheless, the former Middlesbrough manager insists the mounting pressure surrounding the club has not affected him personally. Carrick maintains that his focus remains entirely on improving United’s performances and results rather than external criticism.

“I don’t feel under pressure or particularly bothered by it at all,” Carrick said, as reported by the Metro. “I understand what is happening outside and I understand how the world works.”

Carrick acknowledged that criticism is inevitable when results do not meet expectations, but insisted that it is not something he allows to distract him from his responsibilities.

“The only thing that bothers me is winning football matches and making sure the team is moving in the right direction,” he added. “The problem at the moment is that we’re not there.”

The defeat to Brighton leaves Carrick facing further questions about United’s direction, with the club struggling to turn promising moments into consistent performances. Their collapse at Old Trafford is likely to intensify the focus on the manager as he looks for a response in the matches ahead.

For Carrick, however, the solution remains straightforward: results must improve. With United already enduring a difficult run, the pressure may continue to build, even as the manager maintains that his attention remains firmly fixed on getting the team back on track.
