Fullkrug Set for Germany Return After Difficult West Ham and Milan Spells
Niclas Fullkrug is set to return to Germany with Werder Bremen that become his destination, as the striker looks to revive his career following difficult spells with West Ham United and AC Milan.
According to Sky Sports Germany journalist Florian Plettenberg on X, Fullkrug is scheduled to fly to Germany on Tuesday, August 18, to undergo a medical ahead of his return to Werder Bremen.
The 33-year-old is expected to join Werder on a season-long loan from West Ham. The agreement reportedly does not include an option for the Bundesliga club to make the move permanent at the end of the loan spell.
Fullkrug has also reportedly agreed to take a pay cut in order to return to the club where he previously enjoyed the best period of his career. The Germany international remains under contract with West Ham until June 30, 2028.
A return to Werder represents an opportunity for Fullkrug to rebuild his career after struggling to find consistency in both England and Italy. West Ham signed the striker from Borussia Dortmund in the summer of 2024 for a reported fee of around €27 million.
However, Fullkrug failed to live up to expectations at the London Stadium. He managed just three goals and two assists in 18 appearances across all competitions during his time with the Hammers.
His situation did not improve during the 2025/26 season, when he joined AC Milan on loan. The striker again struggled for regular goals, finding the net only once in 20 appearances for the Rossoneri.
A return to Werder Bremen could therefore provide Füllkrug with the ideal environment to rediscover his confidence and scoring touch. The club played a significant role in his development and was where he established himself as one of Germany’s most reliable strikers.
Fullkrug’s best campaign at the Weserstadion came during the 2022/23 Bundesliga season. He scored 16 goals and provided five assists in 28 league appearances for Werder, finishing the campaign as one of the division’s most prolific forwards.
Now, Fullkrug will hope that his second spell in Bremen can reignite the form that made him a feared Bundesliga striker. With Werder preparing for another Bundesliga campaign, the experienced forward will be tasked with providing goals while attempting to put his difficult years in England and Italy behind him.
