Real Betis will host Real Madrid in the fourth matchweek of the 2026/27 La Liga season on Saturday, September 5, with the visitors arriving in Seville full of confidence after making a perfect start under Jose Mourinho.

The match will take place at the Estadio Benito Villamarin, where Betis will be looking to respond after suffering a heavy defeat in their previous outing. Manuel Pellegrini’s side had made an encouraging start to the campaign, winning two of their opening three matches against Real Sociedad and Valencia.

Their momentum was halted emphatically last weekend, however, when Levante overwhelmed Betis in a 5-2 victory. The result exposed significant defensive problems and left the Andalusian side with plenty to address before welcoming one of the most dangerous attacks in Spanish football.

That challenge becomes even greater with Madrid arriving at the Benito Villamarin.

Mourinho has overseen three consecutive victories since beginning his second spell in charge of Los Blancos. Real Madrid have defeated Espanyol, Real Sociedad and Malaga, with Jude Bellingham and his teammates scoring four goals in each of their victories over the latter two opponents.

Madrid’s attacking form means Betis will need to make considerable improvements at the back. Marc Bartra and his defensive teammates cannot afford another performance like the one against Levante, particularly against a Madrid side capable of punishing even the smallest defensive lapse.

A deeper defensive setup could therefore be one of Betis’ most practical approaches. Pellegrini’s team may look to remain compact, absorb pressure and exploit spaces behind Madrid’s defence through quick counterattacks.

However, Mourinho will also have historical factors to consider.

The Portuguese coach does not boast an entirely dominant record against Betis. Across eight previous meetings, Mourinho has recorded four victories, while the remaining four matches produced three defeats and one draw.

Pellegrini’s record against Madrid is even less encouraging.

The Chilean has faced Los Blancos 31 times during his managerial career with various clubs. He has won only four of those encounters, drawn 12 and lost 15, meaning another defeat against Mourinho’s side would further underline his difficulties against the Spanish giants.

The current form of both teams could therefore make this a particularly challenging fixture for Betis. While the hosts possess enough attacking quality to cause problems, their defensive vulnerability could prove costly against a Madrid team currently operating with considerable confidence.

Madrid, meanwhile, will be aiming to maintain their perfect record and collect a fourth consecutive league victory. With quality spread across every area of the pitch and their attacking players already in excellent form, Los Blancos appear to have the upper hand.

Betis will need a disciplined defensive performance and an effective counterattacking plan to stay competitive. Otherwise, Madrid could extend their winning run and leave Andalusia with another convincing victory.
