Shayne Pattynama Takes Positives From Indonesia’s 2026 AFF Cup Disappointment

Shayne Pattynama has spoken out regarding Indonesia’s poor campaign at the 2026 AFF Championship. The 28-year-old is choosing to focus on the silver linings despite the early exit.

The Indonesian National Team suffered a heartbreaking elimination in the 2026 AFF Championship. Aiming for the title, the Garuda squad instead crashed out in the group stage.

Indonesia initially got off to a strong start in the tournament, securing convincing victories against Cambodia and Timor-Leste.

However, a heavy home defeat to Vietnam put Indonesia’s qualification hopes on thin ice. A final-match draw away to Singapore ultimately ended the campaign for John Herdman’s side.

While deeply disappointed with the early exit, Pattynama is focusing on the lessons learned.

“For me, it’s obviously disappointing that we got eliminated in the group stage. But I gained a lot of valuable playing time out there, and we have to learn from this experience,” said Pattynama.

Pattynama took on a new tactical role during the 2026 AFF Championship. The Persija Jakarta player was deployed as a center-back—a position he adapted to effectively, opening up the possibility of a permanent positional shift for both club and country.

“It’s always great to be back with the team. We got a two-day break after national team duty,” he added. “Now it’s time to refocus on Persija, so I’m really happy to be back.”
