Klopp Calls Up a Midfielder from a Bundesliga Promotion Team to the German National Team

SV Elversberg midfielder Felix Keidel could be in line for his first senior Germany call-up after national team head coach Jurgen Klopp reportedly considers selecting a large squad for the upcoming UEFA Nations League fixtures.

According to BILD, Klopp is considering including Keidel in his squad for the next international window. The versatile 23-year-old has attracted attention with a series of impressive performances at the beginning of Elversberg’s Bundesliga campaign.

Keidel played a key role in Elversberg’s dramatic 4-3 victory over Borussia Monchengladbach, scoring a spectacular free-kick that helped his side complete a remarkable comeback away from home.

The promoted club had made an encouraging start to life in the Bundesliga, winning their opening two matches before suffering a narrow defeat against Bayern Munich. Keidel started all three games and has taken on a different role within the team compared with last season.

During Elversberg’s promotion campaign, he was more frequently deployed as either a right-back or left-back. This season, however, he has been trusted in a deeper midfield role, operating as a defensive midfielder. The positional change has coincided with his emergence as one of Elversberg’s most eye-catching performers.

Keidel joined the club last summer after spending two and a half seasons with Ingolstadt in Germany’s third tier. His versatility has since made him a valuable part of Elversberg’s squad as they adjust to the demands of Bundesliga football.

Despite being 23, Keidel has never represented Germany at youth or senior level. A call-up from Klopp would therefore mark the first time he has been selected to wear the Germany shirt.

Klopp is reportedly considering a squad of as many as 40 players for the upcoming international schedule, potentially creating opportunities for several uncapped players to make their case.

Germany are scheduled to face the Netherlands, Greece in two fixtures, home and away, and Serbia during the next international period.

A larger squad would allow Klopp to assess a broader group of players while maintaining competition for places within the national team. Keidel’s strong start with Elversberg has consequently put him among the names who could benefit from that approach.

For the midfielder, a Germany call-up would represent a significant breakthrough after his rapid rise from the lower divisions to the Bundesliga. Whether Klopp ultimately includes him in the final squad remains to be seen, but his recent performances have placed him firmly on the national team radar.
