Maresca’s Man City Debut Begins with the Worst Record in the Last 120 Years
Enzo Maresca’s new era at Manchester City has begun in disappointing fashion, with the Citizens suffering a heavy 3-0 defeat to Premier League champions Arsenal in the Community Shield at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff.
The result not only handed Maresca a difficult introduction to life at the Etihad but also saw the Italian manager enter Manchester City’s history for an unwanted reason. After the defeat, Maresca admitted that his side still have plenty of work to do ahead of the 2026/27 season.
Manchester City never truly managed to settle into the contest after Arsenal opened the scoring just 23 seconds into the match. Riccardo Calafiori capitalised on a lapse in concentration from the City defence to give the Gunners an early advantage.
The situation became even more difficult for Maresca before the half-hour mark when Kai Havertz doubled Arsenal’s lead. Martin Odegaard then completed the scoring after the interval to secure a convincing 3-0 victory for Mikel Arteta’s side.
The defeat also placed Maresca alongside one of only two Manchester City managers to suffer the club’s heaviest defeat in their first competitive match in charge.
According to Goal, the previous manager to record the unwanted feat was Harry Newbould in 1906. Manchester City lost 4-1 to Arsenal in Newbould’s first competitive game at the helm, giving him and Maresca an unfortunate historical connection more than a century apart.
Maresca acknowledged that Calafiori’s early goal had a significant impact on the game. City attempted to respond and created several opportunities to level the score, but their failure to convert those chances ultimately cost them.
“I think the important part of the game was the first goal we conceded. Unfortunately, after 30 seconds, we had already conceded,” Maresca said, as quoted by Goal.
The former Chelsea manager was nevertheless encouraged by his players’ reaction after falling behind. However, City’s inability to make the most of their chances allowed Arsenal to maintain control before extending their advantage.
“I think the reaction after the first goal was quite good. Before they scored the second, we had three or four chances to score and equalise. Unfortunately, we didn’t take those chances. After the second goal, the game became much more difficult. There were mistakes, but this is only the beginning,” Maresca added.
The Community Shield defeat serves as an early warning for Maresca ahead of his first full campaign in charge. Manchester City will enter the 2026/27 season with expectations of competing for major honours once again, leaving the Italian with little time to address the weaknesses exposed by Arsenal.
For Maresca, the defeat is unlikely to define his tenure. But it has provided an immediate indication of the scale of the challenge awaiting him as he attempts to build a new Manchester City side capable of returning to the highest level.
