Newcastle United and Liverpool will face each other in the opening week of the 2026/27 Premier League season. With both teams now under new management, securing three points will be the main objective for each side.

St. James’ Park will host the clash between Newcastle United and Liverpool. The match is scheduled to take place on Sunday evening, August 23, WIB.

Both teams will be looking for a winning start to the new campaign. A positive result could provide an important boost for Newcastle and Liverpool, who will begin the season under new managers Matthias Jaissle and Andoni Iraola respectively.

However, the visitors will not be an easy opponent for Newcastle. Liverpool have an impressive recent record against the Magpies.

The Reds have lost just once in their recent meetings with Newcastle. Despite being the away side, Liverpool have also enjoyed an excellent record at St. James’ Park, going unbeaten in their last nine visits.

Iraola has also never lost in seven matches against Newcastle, although he has only managed three victories. Furthermore, in his four visits to St. James’ Park, teams managed by Iraola have always scored at least two goals.

Newcastle, meanwhile, head into the match with less convincing form. After being appointed as Eddie Howe’s successor, Jaissle is still searching for his best tactical formula, with Newcastle failing to win any of their last three pre-season matches.

The Magpies have also been weakened by the departure of several key players. Sandro Tonali, Anthony Gordon, and most recently Bruno Guimaraes have all left Newcastle.

Newcastle will also be without Brazilian midfielder Joelinton, who is sidelined with an injury. Tino Livramento is another player who is not yet fully fit.

Liverpool, meanwhile, will also be missing several players due to injury. Conor Bradley, Hugo Ekitike, Joe Gomez, Jayden Danns, and Giovanni Leoni are all expected to miss the match.
