Mourinho Explains Why Rodri Chose Barcelona Over Real Madrid
Rodri’s move to Barcelona has dealt a major blow to Real Madrid, who were also keen to sign the Spain international. Jose Mourinho has now offered his perspective on why the midfielder ultimately chose a move to Catalonia.
Rodri had been identified as a potential target for Madrid as Mourinho looked to strengthen the heart of his midfield. The Portuguese manager felt his squad lacked a commanding presence capable of controlling the tempo of matches.
However, the midfielder eventually decided to leave Manchester City for Barcelona in a deal worth a reported €76.5 million, including various bonuses.
Mourinho was subsequently asked about Madrid’s failure to secure one of their primary targets. Speaking to El Chiringuito, the Portuguese coach suggested that Rodri’s own hesitation played a significant role in the transfer taking a different direction.
“I have spoken to Rodri several times. Real Madrid made him some very good offers. Our relationship with City was also good. The club made an important offer. Rodri had doubts, and I think the things that made him hesitate also made us hesitate. He is an outstanding player, but we don’t want to bring in a player who is having second thoughts,” Mourinho explained.
Mourinho is now beginning his second spell in charge of Real Madrid following a difficult period under Alvaro Arbeloa and an increasingly unsettled dressing room during Xabi Alonso’s tenure.
Despite the turmoil surrounding the club last season, Mourinho insists he has encountered a completely different atmosphere since returning to Madrid. According to the Portuguese, the players have demonstrated a strong desire to succeed and have been receptive to his ideas from the very beginning.
“Last season was confusing for everyone. Whether it was Xabi or Alvaro, they had to pay the price. But winning or losing depends on many factors. I cannot accept a situation where the blame is placed solely on a few people,” Mourinho added.
Mourinho’s comments suggest that his immediate priority is not simply rebuilding Madrid’s squad but also restoring unity within the dressing room. While Rodri’s decision to join Barcelona represents a significant setback in the transfer market, the Portuguese manager appears determined to focus on the players who remain at the Santiago Bernabeu.
With Mourinho back at the helm, Real Madrid are hoping to turn the page after a turbulent campaign. The challenge now is to rebuild a team capable of competing for domestic and European honours while restoring the winning mentality expected at the club
